A little bit of good goes a long way. We couldn’t agree more, which is why we’re proudly sharing the 2012 Yalumba ‘The Guardian’, Shiraz-Viognier, from Eden Valley in Southern Australia’s Barossa region. The Guardian is a beautiful, handcrafted marriage of Eden Valley Shiraz co-fermented with a touch of viognier that delivers fragrant aromatics to the rich, dark fruit notes of fig and plum. On the palate, this is an elegant, silken and medium-bodied wine expressing mulled dark cherries and steeped blackberries. Deep crimson and vibrant in color, this wine is composed with smooth, velvety tannins for a long, soft finish.

As Australia’s oldest, family-owned winery, Yalumba has a rich history deeply rooted in tradition for five generations;; nurturing masterful, handcrafted wines, and the 2012 Guardian Shiraz-Viognier is no exception. This rich and finely-crafted wine is sourced entirely from Eden Valley’s flagship Shiraz and delicate Viognier vineyards, and embodies the family’s dedication to the craft of winemaking.

Awarded 92 points from James Halliday, we’re confident that this wine that this wine won’t last long at our private, member price.

Why We Love It:

We are embracing this delicate addition of the viognier to the Shiraz. The delicate Viognier grape of Edna Valley lends it’s fruitful, crisp and aromatic character to the deep, dark fruit of the Barossa Shiraz. The 2012 Yalumba ‘The Guardian’ Shiraz-Viognier is a wine with class, character and a story to tell, and this bottle is something you’ll want to share. We predict more labels proudly boasting a touch of Viognier to deep red grapes for an enjoyable, highly drinkable wine.

Sommelier notes

"Co-fermenting viognier with Eden Valley shiraz is a thoroughly logical approach. The colour is vibrant, the palate medium-bodied, and the finish is long. The surprise is the overall savoury nature of the wine, not the least unpleasant.." - James Halliday

Ripe dark fruit on the nose with notes of violet and lavender, and hints of mulberry and cinnamon to boot.  This is a hugely expressive wine, showing stomped berries and numerous spices on the palate, but all held up on a firm structure and bright acidity.  The coastal location makes for a more nuanced Shiraz, none of the flabby filler and jammy fruit, there’s much more focus here.  Really a great bottle of wine that can be enjoyed now through 2022. - DZ July 2016
