About this wine

From the great minds behind Clos du Val plus a stopover in Spain, this is cutting-edge winemaking with a traditional accent, and a delightful everyday white that far overachieves its modest price tag.

Warm weather and long days of sunshine that last until well after 8pm call for refreshing, fruit-driven whites. This one is 75% Viura, a local favorite in this part of Spain, with 25% Chardonnay added for weight and complexity. It’s a bold and bright as the foods Spanish folks are famous for: Iberian ham, grilled fish, shellfish studded paella... Our Panel noted lots of citrus and piquant pineapple notes on this 2012 balanced by a hint of vanilla oak and a tickling sensation of lively acidity.

All this bright, tropical fruit and clean, thirst-quenching character makes this a big-time crowd pleaser that is pretty much impossible not to love.

Reasons why we love it:

The deAlto label is a collaboration of two seemingly disparate parts: the Manzanos family is a fourth-generation clan of Rioja locals absolutely steeped in the regional wine tradition. While Clos du Val remains one of the Napa Valley’s most tried and true producers of award-winning Californian wines.

This Spanish white owes its brightness and verve to fermentation in stainless steel at a cool and controlled temperature. While a short stint in oak (four months) imparts a toasty note that balances the wine to perfection.

About 350 acres of vineyards are under the deAlto winery’s belt, and all are planted on Rioja’s famous clay- and lime-rich soils. 100% of the fruit grown here is hand picked, a rarity when making wines at this value price point.

Sommelier notes

We just thought this wine was fantastic! Loving aromatic, dry white wines the way we do, this wine had it all. An interesting blend of Viura, an indigenous grape, and Chardonnay. The blend offers delightful aromas of ripe peach and pear that get your mouth watering right away. In the mouth, the juicy stone fruit is supported with a streak of zesty citrus and subtle minerality. Nicely textured and cleanly balanced, this wine really stood out to us.-PM
